Vatika Castle is first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Morea, which records the granting of the area by William II Villehardouin to the nobles of Monemvasia. In 1262, the region came under Byzantine rule and later alternated between Venetian and Ottoman control until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

The Olive and Greek Olive Oil Museum in Sparta showcases the history, culture, and technology of the olive and olive oil production, a cornerstone of Greek and Mediterranean identity. Unique in Greece, it is located in the heart of Laconia, a major olive-producing region.
The upper floor exhibits the earliest evidence of olives in Greece, from prehistoric findings (50,000–60,000 years old) and Linear B tablets to the 20th century. It highlights the olive’s role in the economy, diet, personal care, lighting, and art, as well as its symbolic importance in religion, mythology, and social customs.
The lower floor presents the evolution of olive oil production technology from antiquity to the pre-industrial era, with displays of animal-driven and wooden presses, recreations of mechanized mills, and soap-making sections. The Semi-Open-Air Exhibition (2007) illustrates the operation of prehistoric, Hellenistic, and Byzantine olive presses.
