Vatika Castle is first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Morea, which records the granting of the area by William II Villehardouin to the nobles of Monemvasia. In 1262, the region came under Byzantine rule and later alternated between Venetian and Ottoman control until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

The Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos is considered one of the most important museums in Crete. It was established to house the numerous archaeological finds from Eastern Crete, which until then had been transferred to the Heraklion Museum. The exhibition covers a vast chronological span, from the Neolithic Period (5700–2800 BC) to the end of the Greco-Roman period (100 BC–400 AD). Visitors can follow the evolution of art in the region through representative examples of different styles and eras.

FAQ
Among the most significant collections are the grave goods from the Early Minoan cemetery of Agia Fotia near Sitia (3000–2300 BC), displayed in the first gallery, and the finds from the Palace of Malia, uncovered through the excavations of the French Archaeological School, exhibited in the fourth gallery. The museum houses collections of highly important archaeological finds from across Eastern Crete, an area stretching from Malia to the distant site of Zakros. The museum’s most famous exhibit, the “Goddess of Myrtos,” is an exceptional libation vessel dating to the EM IIb period. It is shaped as a stylized female deity with a very small head set on a tall, slender neck and a bell-shaped body. With her right hand she holds, and with her left embraces, a small beak-spouted jug, which served as the unique outlet for liquid from the interior of the vessel.
