The Geometric settlement of Zagora is located on the plateau of a distinctive and rather steep peninsula, at an altitude of 160 metres. Excavations have revealed a large part of the Geometric settlement, dating from the 10th to the 8th century BC, which was protected on its inland side by a strong fortification wall, 110 metres long. Access to the settlement was through a large gateway, which was reconstructed during the 6th century BC, when the temple was also built. The sanctuary, whose foundation dates back to the 8th century BC, continued to function until the 5th century BC, although the settlement had been abandoned around 700 BC. The temple, built around 575–500 BC, is megaron-shaped, with an enclosed pronaos and a cella that enclosed the old altar. Athena may have been worshipped here. The finds from the settlement are displayed at the Archaeological Museum of Andros.
