Vatika Castle is first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Morea, which records the granting of the area by William II Villehardouin to the nobles of Monemvasia. In 1262, the region came under Byzantine rule and later alternated between Venetian and Ottoman control until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

Dion, at the foot of Mount Olympus, was the sacred city of the Macedonians, dedicated to Olympian Zeus. The city was an important religious and political center, where King Archelaus established the Olympia at Dion, while Philip II and Alexander the Great celebrated their greatest victories there. The archaeological site covers approximately 150 hectares (1,500 stremmata) and includes the fortified city, public buildings, private houses, workshops, and sanctuaries that were continuously inhabited from the Classical period through the Early Christian era. The city was laid out according to the Hippodamian urban planning system, and most of the visible monuments date from the Roman period. Its central paved street, luxurious residences, shops, public baths, and the famous Villa of Dionysus testify to the prosperity of Dion during the imperial period. Outside the city walls lie the most important sanctuaries, the Hellenistic and Roman theatres, the stadium, and other monuments that highlight the city's religious and cultural character. At Dion, Olympian Zeus, Demeter, the Egyptian deities Sarapis, Isis, and Anubis, as well as Aphrodite Hypolympidia, were worshipped, while the city's cemetery preserves funerary monuments dating from the 5th century BC to the 5th century AD.
