Vatika Castle is first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Morea, which records the granting of the area by William II Villehardouin to the nobles of Monemvasia. In 1262, the region came under Byzantine rule and later alternated between Venetian and Ottoman control until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

The Goulandris Natural History Museum was founded in 1964 by Angelos and Niki Goulandris with the aim of “promoting the Natural Sciences and simultaneously raising human awareness so that, through knowledge, humanity may return to respecting nature as the unique source of life.” Its activities include both scientific research on environmental topics (natural resources and the physicochemical, biochemical, and ecological processes governing ecosystems and their organisms), as well as environmental education, which has been continuously carried out since 1974 and is addressed to children of all educational levels. The headquarters of the Foundation is located in Kifissia. In two adjacent buildings, where architectural harmony bridges the centuries, two major, independent yet thematically interconnected exhibition sections are housed: the Natural History collections exhibition in the historic Natural History Museum building (13 Levidou Street) and the environmental exhibition of the new GAIA Center (100 Othonos Street). The Natural History Museum building (13 Levidou Street) is housed in an elegant 19th-century neoclassical building (1875), adapted to meet the scientific and educational needs of the Foundation. The exhibition areas present: A. Botanical exhibits: evolution, anatomy, and morphology of plants, as well as plant fossils. B. Zoological exhibits: insects; representative species from major groups; mammals with rare species from various habitats worldwide; birds with emphasis on Greek avifauna; reptiles and amphibians (Greek and international); mollusks with collections of shells from Greece and around the world; corals. C. Geological and paleontological exhibits: rich samples of minerals, rocks, and fossils, accompanied by models, diagrams, cross-sections, and more.

FAQ
In 2001, the Foundation inaugurated the Environmental Research and Education Center “GAIA”, which is a “natural continuation” of the Museum, aiming at basic scientific research and education for a new awareness and redefinition of the relationship between Humans and Nature. It is another step toward fulfilling the vision of the Museum’s founder, Angelos Goulandris, whose words define its mission: “Our work is not limited to saving the natural environment of our country. No country can be saved when the global ecosystem is disrupted. We seek a new code of values, a new ethic, to enter the next millennium.” The GAIA Center covers 12,000 sq.m. across six floors, four of which are underground. It includes modern research laboratories, an auditorium, conference and projection facilities, a library with reading room, a shop, a café–canteen, and a parking area. Its exhibition spaces feature the impressive “Geosphere” and modern interactive exhibits that invite visitors to explore, reflect, and take a stand on urgent environmental issues of the planet: energy, transport, natural resource management, water, soil, and food. The activities of the Goulandris Natural History Museum include educational programs for students, special seminars and training sessions for teachers, conferences on ecology, and related exhibitions. Research programs focused on the protection of natural resources—soil, water, and air—and on human nutrition and health are carried out in the Soil Ecology and Biotechnology and Bioanalytical Chemistry laboratories, in collaboration with Greek and international institutions.
