Vatika Castle is first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Morea, which records the granting of the area by William II Villehardouin to the nobles of Monemvasia. In 1262, the region came under Byzantine rule and later alternated between Venetian and Ottoman control until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

The Museum was founded in 1977 and is housed in the residence of the great painter of modern Greek art, Georgios Gounaropoulos (1890–1977), in Zografou. The Museum exhibits 32 works by the painter, oil paintings and 14 drawings in black and color crayons, 5 studies of his, as well as his personal belongings.
