Vatika Castle is first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Morea, which records the granting of the area by William II Villehardouin to the nobles of Monemvasia. In 1262, the region came under Byzantine rule and later alternated between Venetian and Ottoman control until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

The Museum of Cycladic Art was founded in 1986 to house the Cycladic and Ancient Greek Art collection of Nikolaos and Aikaterini Goulandris. It is located on Neophytou Douka Street in Athens, while since 1991 it has also expanded into the neoclassical Stathatos Mansion, a work by Ernst Ziller (1895).

The Goulandris Foundation (established in 1985) aims to study and promote the culture of the Aegean from prehistory to modern times. It fulfills this mission through permanent and temporary exhibitions at the museum.

The Cycladic Art collection, with approximately 350 objects made of clay, metal, and marble, is considered one of the most important in the world. Particularly notable are the marble figurines of the 3rd millennium BC, mainly female forms characterized by an abstract aesthetic.

The Ancient Greek Art collection (2nd millennium BC – 4th century AD) includes pottery, sculpture, works in bronze, glass, and coins, while on the 4th floor is displayed the Karlos and Rita Politis collection, featuring marble sculptures, jewelry, and ancient metal helmets.
