The Hellenic Maritime Museum was founded in 1949 and presents the creation, history, and evolution of Greek seafaring and naval activity from prehistoric times to the present day. The Museum’s mission is to identify, collect, preserve, safeguard, and exhibit objects related to the achievements of the Greeks in maritime endeavors from prehistoric times to today. Its objectives also include the study and documentation of Greece’s maritime heritage, as well as fostering an appreciation of the sea among younger generations, thereby fulfilling the Museum’s educational role. The ten exhibition halls of the Hellenic Maritime Museum, covering a total area of 1,850 square meters, showcase the maritime journey of Hellenism from prehistory to the modern era. The first gallery houses the Maritime Art Collection, featuring works by renowned 19th- and 20th-century marine painters, including Prosalentis, Volanakis, and Chatzis. The remaining exhibitions cover antiquity, the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods, the Balkan Wars, the Second World War, and contemporary times, with particular emphasis on the transition from sailing vessels to steamships and the development of the merchant navy. The Museum also holds an important collection of maps dating from the 16th to the 19th century, as well as the country’s only specialized maritime library, containing more than 10,000 volumes. The library is open to the public and researchers and serves over 2,000 visitors annually.
