The Museum opened its doors to the public in August 1979. Stratis Eleftheriadis – Teriade (1889–1983) was an inspired publisher. His “collaboration” with leading artists of the 20th century gave rise to the so-called Great Books, which are the Museum’s most important exhibits. The Teriade Museum permanently houses the exhibition entitled “Homage to Teriade”, which was organised in May 1973 at the Grand Palais in Paris by the French Ministry of Culture. For the first time, painters such as Matisse, Picasso and Chagall were given the opportunity not simply to illustrate books, but to create works of visual art using the book as their medium. The Museum also displays works by Baudin, Bores, Chagall, Giacometti, Gromaire, Laurence, Le Corbusier, Léger, Matisse, Miró and Picasso, as well as by the Greek artists Giorgos Vakirtzis, Theofilos Hatzimichael, Manolis Kalligiannis, Orestis Kanellis, Kalliroi Marouda, Giorgos Rorris and Giannis Tsarouchis.
