The Acropolis Museum, one of the most important in the world, houses unique masterpieces, primarily original works of Archaic and Classical Greek art, which are closely connected to the sacred rock of the Acropolis of Athens. These include free-standing votive sculptures, as well as series of architectural sculptures that adorned the buildings erected on the rock of the Acropolis at different periods.
The collections also include votive and honorary reliefs, terracotta objects such as vases, figurines, and reliefs, as well as other categories of minor arts, such as votive bronze figurines and vessels. Some of these sculptures, bronze objects, and vases were transferred from the National Archaeological Museum, where they had been preserved. Works bearing inscriptions (bases of votive monuments, honorary decrees, lists of dedications to Athena, inscriptions from the Erechtheion building) come from the Epigraphical Museum, while the coins (“treasures”) are from the Numismatic Museum of Athens.
