The “Lychnostatis” Museum is an open-air museum of traditional life and folk culture located in Limenas Hersonissou, Heraklion, Crete, founded by the physician and folklorist George Markakis with the aim of reviving and presenting the everyday life and culture of traditional Cretan society. It was built between 1986 and 1992 almost entirely using natural materials such as stone, wood, and clay and without heavy machinery, and it opened to the public in 1992 as a private museum. Visitors can see reconstructions of traditional houses and workshops, exhibits related to agriculture and pre-industrial technology, collections from Cretan nature such as plants, minerals, and animals, as well as objects of daily life, art, and folk tradition, while cultural events and educational programs are often held, making it a living experience rather than a static exhibition.
