Vatika Castle is first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Morea, which records the granting of the area by William II Villehardouin to the nobles of Monemvasia. In 1262, the region came under Byzantine rule and later alternated between Venetian and Ottoman control until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

In the Old Building of the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene, the history of Lesbos unfolds from the Final Neolithic period to the Late Roman period. The first floor of the mansion houses exhibits from the Final Neolithic period (Agios Vartholomaios Cave), as well as from the Bronze Age (Thermi). They are displayed in three rooms and along the corridor. The second floor presents, in chronological order, objects dating from the 10th century BC to the 4th century AD. These are displayed in six rooms and along the corridor. The outbuilding houses the unique Aeolic capitals, as well as inscriptions, displayed in two rooms. Finally, the courtyard contains large sculptures and architectural elements from important buildings of the Hellenistic and Roman periods in Mytilene. A prominent place in the permanent exhibition is occupied by finds from excavations of the Bronze Age settlement complex at Thermi. These include clay vessels, stone, metal and bone tools, weapons, loom weights and spindle whorls, as well as figurines. The New Building is divided into three levels. The exhibition in the New Building of the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene presents the everyday religious, economic and political life of the island from the 3rd century BC to the 4th century AD. The architecture of the building was determined by the fragile subsoil and the steep slope of the site. The exhibition programme was designed in accordance with the architecture of the building. The exhibition areas, arranged over two floors, comprise six rooms for the permanent exhibition and two rooms for temporary exhibitions. The layout of the spaces led to the permanent exhibition being organised into three sections. The three adjoining rooms on the ground floor display mosaic floors from Roman villas, while the semi-basement houses examples of Lesbian sculpture, including reliefs, portraits and fully carved sculptures. The temporary exhibition rooms host exhibits relating to Roman banquets.
