The Archaeological Site of Ypsili, in the area of Aprovatou, is one of the most important archaeological sites on the island of Andros. Ypsili was a fortified settlement with an organized and densely developed urban layout, protected by a strong defensive wall. The layout of the settlement and the archaeological finds brought to light provide valuable information about the organization of Cycladic settlements, as well as about everyday life during the Geometric and Archaic periods. A sanctuary occupies a prominent place within the settlement and was probably dedicated to Demeter. Cult activity at the site continued until approximately the middle of the 5th century BC. Ypsili therefore constitutes an important source of knowledge for the study of the Geometric and Archaic periods in the Cyclades.
