Vatika Castle is first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Morea, which records the granting of the area by William II Villehardouin to the nobles of Monemvasia. In 1262, the region came under Byzantine rule and later alternated between Venetian and Ottoman control until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

One of the remarkable constructions of the 5th century BC in the Sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia is the square poros stone bridge near the northwestern corner of the Stoa. It served the passage of pedestrians and wheeled vehicles over the streambed of the waters flowing from the Sacred Spring into the Erasinos River and aimed to make the sanctuary area accessible. At the southwestern corner and along the entire southern side of the bridge, the slabs are connected with double-T-shaped clamps, the cuttings of which are still preserved. It has been suggested that this bridge replaced an earlier wooden one.
