The Maritime Museum of Galaxidi is inextricably linked to the town’s centuries-old maritime tradition and constitutes an important institution for preserving and showcasing its history. It is considered the oldest maritime museum in Greece. The exhibition presents the diachronic development of Galaxidi, from antiquity to the beginning of the 20th century. Through the exhibits, the history of the town unfolds, from ancient Galaxidi and the periods of Byzantine and Ottoman rule to the attacks and destruction suffered by the town, as well as the development of its maritime and commercial activities. Particular reference is made to the participation of the people of Galaxidi in the Greek War of Independence during the period 1821–1829. A special place in the exhibition is occupied by paintings of Greek sailing ships from the 19th and early 20th centuries, which depict the development of sailing and the vessels associated with the maritime history of Galaxidi. Of particular interest are also the figureheads, the wooden sculptures placed at the bows of ships, which constitute characteristic examples of maritime art and tradition. The exhibition also highlights Galaxidi’s important shipbuilding tradition, maritime trade routes and the organization of shipping activities. Among the exhibits are nautical instruments and navigation equipment, shipping documents, stamps and other objects associated with the everyday life and profession of Galaxidi’s sailors.
