The Brick and Tile Museum N. & S. Tsalapatas is a rare surviving example of an industrial complex in Greece. The museum aims to highlight the historical identity of the city of Volos and serves as a significant cultural hub. It contributes to strengthening the cultural heritage of the Thessaly region, to the preservation and promotion of industrial heritage, as well as to the development of cultural tourism in the wider region of Magnesia. The brickworks was founded in 1926 by the Tsalapatas brothers. A variety of bricks and tiles were produced in the factory. In 2004, the Cultural Foundation of the Piraeus Group undertook the creation of a model Brick and Tile Museum within the main factory premises (5,000 sq. m). Two years later, the Tsalapatas factory “comes to life” again: grinders, presses, cutters, clay tanks, wagons, and the Hoffmann kiln reconstruct the production process for visitors and their acquaintance with the traditional craft of brick and tile making and the specialized techniques of raw material processing. The permanent exhibition, developed in the buildings where production originally took place, is complemented by models and rich educational material, while special educational programs and events ensure visitors’ direct contact with all stages of brick and tile production.
