The Museum of Greek Costume History is a specialized museum housing a collection of around 25,000 items, including authentic regional Greek costumes from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, jewelry, replicas of Minoan, Archaic, and Byzantine garments, as well as porcelain dolls dressed in traditional attire. Its mission is to collect, preserve, study, and showcase the history of Greek dress.
The museum is located in a two-story building from the 1920s at 7 Dimokritou Street. Although compact, its exhibition space is functional, hosting temporary themed exhibitions that explore costumes by geographic region, ethnocultural group, or ceremonial use. In addition, the museum offers educational programs, guided tours, lectures, and workshops, and participates in exhibitions both in Greece and internationally.
The collection began in 1911 under the initiative of Kallirrois Parren and has since been enriched through donations, purchases, and replicas of historic garments. The museum officially opened in 1988, following the relocation of the collection in 1987 to its current home. The building was renovated to preserve its urban architectural character while adapting it for museum use. Today, the museum operates as part of the Lyceum Club of Greek Women, has been a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) since 1997, and aims to serve as a hub for scholarly research and cultural engagement..
