It is worth noting the absence of the original Parthenon sculptures from the Acropolis Museum, as they are preserved in European museums and university collections (the British Museum, the Louvre, etc.). The museum and its activities are closely linked to the archaeological site, as well as to the restoration work carried out on the monuments of the rock and its slopes. The Acropolis Museum is a thematic museum, as its collections originate from a single archaeological site, the Acropolis of Athens. It was inaugurated in the summer of 2009 and provides a comprehensive view of the character and historical development of the sacred rock and its slopes. The museum’s exhibition spaces are spread across four levels: • Ground floor: presentation of finds from the sanctuaries and the habitation that developed on the slopes of the Acropolis during all historical periods. • First floor: a circular route reviewing almost the entire history of the top of the rock, from the 2nd millennium BCE to the end of Antiquity. • Third floor: exhibition of the sculptural decoration of the Parthenon, the largest temple on the Acropolis. • Building’s basement: the remains of the ancient Athenian city uncovered through archaeological excavations.
