Vatika Castle is first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Morea, which records the granting of the area by William II Villehardouin to the nobles of Monemvasia. In 1262, the region came under Byzantine rule and later alternated between Venetian and Ottoman control until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

The small Roman bath is located in the northern part of Sector I of the archaeological site of Ancient Eleutherna (Katsivelos area). It comprises at least three construction phases dating from the 2nd to the 6th/7th century AD. Its construction appears to have begun after the middle of the 2nd century AD, following the destruction and abandonment of the adjacent public building of the Hellenistic–Roman period. On its western side, two identical rooms functioning as hypocaust chambers (underfloor heating systems) were uncovered. Their floors have not survived. The two chambers communicated with each other through an air duct and both belong to the earliest phase of the building. They were abandoned at the end of the 4th century AD and were subsequently used as refuse disposal areas during the Early Byzantine period, mainly in the 6th and 7th centuries AD. Adjacent to the western apsidal side of the two hypocaust chambers are three rooms of unknown function, which belong to a later construction phase. Along the northern side of the bath, a complex of six rooms was uncovered. Three of these rooms formed part of a residence, while the other three constituted extensions of the bath complex. The second phase of use of the bath came to an end during the reign of Emperor Constans II.
