The Velika Castle is a fortification dating to the Early Christian period (6th century AD), located on a hill east of the Monastery of Theologos Melivias, close to the sea. It was built on the site of the acropolis of ancient Meliboea, the city of the Homeric king Philoctetes, which was destroyed by the Romans in 168 BC. It offers a commanding view over all coastal settlements from Cape Dermatas to Mavrovouni, which belonged to the territory of the ancient city and lay along the coastal road from Macedonia to southern Greece. The castle covers an area of 21 stremmata, with walls 2 meters thick, while its height in places reaches up to 3 meters. On the eastern and southern sides, which are preserved at greater height, five towers and two gates have been revealed. On the southern side, parallel to the Byzantine wall, an important part of the ancient fortification is also preserved.
