Vatika Castle is first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Morea, which records the granting of the area by William II Villehardouin to the nobles of Monemvasia. In 1262, the region came under Byzantine rule and later alternated between Venetian and Ottoman control until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

The Giannopouleio Archaeological Museum of Almyros is housed in a neoclassical building dating from 1930, which was constructed for the collection of antiquities, manuscripts, and books from the wider region. The exhibition presents the history of ancient Achaia Phthiotis, as well as the ancient cities of Phthiotic Thebes and Alos. It hosts rare archaeological finds from the area, covering periods from prehistoric times to late antiquity.
