Vatika Castle is first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Morea, which records the granting of the area by William II Villehardouin to the nobles of Monemvasia. In 1262, the region came under Byzantine rule and later alternated between Venetian and Ottoman control until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

The Archaeological Museum of Delphi, one of the most important museums in Greece, presents the history of the renowned Delphic sanctuary and the most famous oracle of the ancient Greek world. Its rich collections mainly include architectural sculptures, statues and works of minor arts, votive offerings dedicated by worshippers to the sanctuary, reflecting its religious, political and artistic activity throughout its historical course, from the foundation of the Temple of Apollo in the 8th century BC to its decline during Late Antiquity. The permanent exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Delphi extends across 14 galleries and presents unique masterpieces of ancient Greek art. Among the most important exhibits are the famous Charioteer of Delphi, the world-renowned bronze statue that serves as the museum’s symbol; the imposing Sphinx of the Naxians, dating to around 560 BC; the monumental Archaic kouroi Kleobis and Biton from Argos; the marble Omphalos, a symbol of the “centre of the world” according to ancient Greek tradition; and the celebrated sculptures from the Treasury of the Siphians, with their relief friezes depicting the Gigantomachy, scenes from the Trojan War and other mythological representations.
