The Sanctuary of Messon was an important centre of pan-Lesbian worship and the seat of the Koinon of the Lesbians, the common political and religious organisation of the cities of Lesbos. During the Archaic period, a rectangular cult building stood here, the remains of which were incorporated into the Late Classical temple built around 330–300 BC. According to the prevailing view, the sanctuary was dedicated to the Lesbian Triad: Zeus, Hera and Dionysus. Following its destruction during the Late Roman period, the site was used as a workshop, while during the Early Christian period a cemetery basilica was established there. Later, a Middle Byzantine chapel dedicated to Archangel Michael was built, and his worship continues at the site to this day.
