Το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Μυκόνου κτίσθηκε το 1902, ειδικά για να στεγάσει τα ευρήματα απο τον “Βόθρο της Καθάρσεως” του 426/5 π.Χ., που αποκάλυψε το 1898 ο Δημ. Σταυρόπουλος στη Ρήνεια.

Το σχέδιο ήταν του αρχιτέκτονα Αλέξανδρου Λυκάκη, ενώ η δαπάνη καταβλήθηκε από το Υπουργείο Εθνικής Παιδείας και Θρησκευμάτων και την εν Αθήναις Αρχαιολογική Εταιρεία. Το οικόπεδο είναι δωρεά του Δήμου Μυκονίων. Το αρχικό νεοκλασικό κτήριο πήρε τη σημερινή “νησιώτικη” μορφή του το 1934, ενώ το 1972 προστέθηκε η μεγάλη ανατολική αίθουσα.

Στο Μουσείο εκτίθεται μεγάλος αριθμός αγγείων προϊστορικών μέχρι υστεροελληνιστικών χρόνων (μέσα 3ης χιλιετίας – 1ος αιώνας π.Χ.), επιτύμβια αγάλματα, στήλες και τεφροδόχοι κάλπες από τη Ρήνεια και πολύ λίγα αγγεία από τη Μύκονο.

– Αγγεία των μέσων της τρίτης χιλιετίας π.Χ. – 1ου αιώνα π.Χ.,

– Ειδώλια του 2ου – 1ου αιώνα π.Χ.,

– Κοσμήματα και μικροαντικείμενα του 2ου – 1ου αιώνα π.Χ.

Archaeological Museum of Mykonos

The Archaeological Museum of Mykonos was built in 1902, in order to house the finds from the “Purification Pit” of 426/5 B.C., which was discovered in 1898 on the islet of Rheneia, by D. Stavropoulos.

It was designed by Alexandros Lykakis and paid for by the Ministry of Education and the Archaeological Society of Athens, while the land was donated by the Municipality of Mykonos. The original Neoclassical building assumed its present, “insular” form in 1934, and the large, eastern room, was added in 1972.
The exhibition of the museum includes a large number of vases, ranging from the prehistoric to the late Hellenistic period (25th-1st century B.C.), grave statues, stelae and funerary urns from Rheneia, and very few finds from Mykonos.

The museum contains the following collections:

– Funerary statues and grave stelae dating from the 2nd/1st century B.C.,

– Pottery dating from the 25th to the 1st century B.C.,

– Clay figurines dated to the 2nd/1st century B.C.,

– Jewellery and small objects of the 2nd/1st century B.C.
