Το κτήριο της Αρχαιολογικής Συλλογής Σάμης – Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Σάμης βρίσκεται επί της κεντρικής πλατείας της σύγχρονης πόλης, στην οδό Ιωάννου Μεταξά, πλησίον σημαντικών ορατών μνημείων της ομώνυμης αρχαίας πόλης και σε απόσταση περίπου 5 χιλ. από την ακρόπολή της. Πάγιο αίτημα των κατοίκων ήταν η δημιουργία ενός χώρου, κατάλληλου για την έκθεση του πλήθους των ευρημάτων, που προέκυψαν και εξακολουθούν να προκύπτουν από τις έρευνες σωστικού χαρακτήρα στην περιοχή. Για το σκοπό αυτό παραχωρήθηκε το 2001 από την Κτηματική Υπηρεσία του Δημοσίου στο Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού το κτήριο, στο οποίο αρχικά στεγάζονταν γραφεία της τότε κοινότητας Σάμης.
Η εκπόνηση μιας σειράς μελετών ωρίμανσης το 2009, από την τότε ΛΕ΄ Ε.Π.Κ.Α., στο πλαίσιο του Μέτρου 3.3 «Μελέτες Ωρίμανσης και Προετοιμασίας» του Ε.Π. «Πολιτισμός», για αρχαιολογικούς χώρους και μουσεία του Νομού Κεφαλληνίας ήταν το πρώτο βήμα για την υλοποίηση του εκθεσιακού χώρου της Αρχαιολογικής Συλλογής – Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Σάμης.
Παράλληλα, επίσης το 2009, παραχωρήθηκε ζώνη της πλατείας μπροστά από το κτήριο, από τη Δημοτική Ενότητα Σάμης του Δήμου Κεφαλονιάς, για την έκθεση ψηφιδωτών δαπέδων, που αποκαλύφθηκαν κατά τις ανασκαφικές έρευνες στη Σάμη, τα οποία δεν κατέστη δυνατό να διατηρηθούν κατά χώραν. Το Σεπτέμβριο του 2013 εντάχθηκε η Πράξη «Επισκευή και Δημιουργία Αρχαιολογικής Συλλογής Σάμης και Έκθεση ψηφιδωτών στην Κεφαλονιά» στο πλαίσιο του ΕΣΠΑ, στο Επιχειρησιακό Πρόγραμμα «Ανταγωνιστικότητα και Επιχειρηματικότητα». Εν συνεχεία, στις 29-12-2016 εντάχθηκε ως μεταφερόμενο έργο στο Επιχειρησιακό Πρόγραμμα «Ιόνια Νησιά» στο πλαίσιο του ΕΣΠΑ 2014- 2020.
Στο πλαίσιο της Πράξης εντάχθηκαν τρία υποέργα: 1) «Επισκευή κτηρίου και δημιουργία Αρχαιολογικής Συλλογής Σάμης – Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Σάμης και διαμόρφωση περιβάλλοντος χώρου», απολογιστικά και δι’ αυτεπιστασίας από την Εφορεία Αρχαιοτήτων Κεφαλληνίας και Ιθάκης, 2) «Προμήθεια και εγκατάσταση προθηκών και λοιπών μουσειακών κατασκευών Αρχαιολογικής Συλλογής Σάμης», κατόπιν Διαγωνισμού άνω των κοινοτικών κατωφλιών από την Εφορεία Αρχαιοτήτων Κεφαλληνίας και Ιθάκης και 3) «Εργασίες συντήρησης και τοποθέτησης έξι (6) ψηφιδωτών δαπέδων και τμημάτων τοίχων στον περιβάλλοντα χώρο της Αρχαιολογικής Συλλογής Σάμης – Κεφαλονιάς», δι’ αυτεπιστασίας από τη Διεύθυνση Συντήρησης Αρχαίων και Νεωτέρων Μνημείων.
Archaeological Collection of Same
The building of the Archaeological Collection of Same is situated in the central square of the city of Same, on Ioannou Metaxa Str., in the vicinity of significant visible monuments of the homonymous ancient city, around 5km far from its citadel. The great amount of archaeological finds, along with the continuous control by the Service over all building activities and technical works, and a series of limitations applied to building activities, have reinforced the constant demand of local residents for the creation of a space suitable for the exhibition of so many finds recovered in the past or even today during rescue excavations in the area. For this purpose, the particular building, which initially housed the offices of the Community of Same, was ceded by the Regional Directorate of Public Properties to the Ministry of Culture in 2001.
The completion of a series of studies in 2009 by the then Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in the context of the project “Studies of Maturity and Preparation” of the “Culture” Program for the archaeological sites and museums of the prefecture of Kephallenia was the first step taken towards the creation of an exhibition space for the Archaeological collection.
A part of the square in front of the building was also ceded to the Collection by Same’s Municipal Union of Cephalonia’s municipality in 2009, in order to house the exhibition of mosaic floors which were discovered during excavation research at Same and were not possible to preserve in situ.
In September 2013, the project “Restoration and Creation of the Archaeological Collection of Same and exhibition of mosaic floors” was included in the Operational Program “Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship” of the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) for the 2007-2013 period. Later, on 29-12-2016 it was included as a transferred project in the NSRF 2014-2020 “Ionian Islands” Program.
The project included three sub-projects: 1) “Restoration and Creation of the Archaeological Collection of Same and landscaping of the surrounding area”, under self-supervision by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cephalonia, 2) “Supply and installation of showcases and other museum equipment of the Archaeological Collection of Same”, by a contract above the EU thresholds following a Competition and 3) Restoration and placement of six (6) mosaic floors and parts of walls in the surrounding area of the Archaeological Collection of Same, Cephalonia.”, under self-supervision by the Directorate of Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments.
The exhibition is structured in five rooms, each one of which hosts a thematic section represented by finds from Same and the wider area, which is identified with the one thought to be controlled by the city-state of the Classical and Hellenistic period. The first section displays the diachronic habitation of Same since the Early Bronze Age until the Early Byzantine period. The second section is devoted to the water element and its role in the city?s history, and the third section displays different aspects of human activities. In the fourth section numerous artifacts represent burial practices of the inhabitants of Same and Panormos.

Room 1 of Same?s Archaeological Collection hosts finds from Same attesting to the human activities in the wider area carrying on uninterruptedly since the Bronze Age, while also providing information on the city?s evolution over time. Epigraphic exhibits and sculptures are on display, most of which would decorate public areas of the city, while the exhibition also includes items related to settlement remains, informing the visitors on building methods applied in Same and the city of Panormos too.
Room 2 focuses on the significance of the water element for Same and especially for the Roman city. Research here has revealed important installations related to the use of water, such as a fountain house and bath complexes, whose remains occupy a large part of Same. For this reason, part of a hypocaust room has been reproduced in the Collection, combined with a reconstruction of the bathing process. The exhibition?s information boards give the opportunity to visitors to get to know about the baths that existed not only in Same but also in Fiscardo. The significance of the sea for the inhabitants of Same and of the city of Panormos can also be appreciated in the section on ?Sea transports ? underwater excavations?. In this section are presented underwater amphorae ? which come from the sea area of Same, Agia Efimia and Fiskardo ? with visible marks on them from their long stay at the bottom of the sea, confirm the importance of its ports eastern and northern Kefalonia for the trade of the island.
Room 3 is devoted to various aspects of everyday life in Same and Panormos, so that visitors can become familiar with the habits, choices and activities of the citizens living in these two cities. More specifically, the exhibition includes finds throwing light on religious beliefs, war issues, gymnasia ? sports, symposia and cooking, production activities and house production, transactions and in general the economy, the beautification and the glass-making industry ? i.e. the glass world as revealed by numerous and variable glass exhibits.
Finds exhibited in Room 4 inform the visitor about the Samaians? and Panormites? burial practices, while also transmitting what the living felt for their beloved ones, who passed away, and their concern to bid them farewell in a suitable way. It has been observed that objects accompanying the deceased represent the deceased themselves, as well as their beloved ones, who chose these offerings to bid them farewell. The reconstruction of a part of a Roman mausoleum found in the city of Panormos intends to throw light on the monument?s architecture and the significance of the burial monuments for the city. Finally, the display of original sarcophagi coming from another mausoleum in the city?s cemetery has transported part of it inside the exhibition.
Finally, Room 5 is devoted to multimedia applications and educational programs. The visitors? virtual tour at the baths of Same and the city of Panormos is achieved by using a virtual reality headset (VR HMD All-in-One) or a screen and controller. At various points of interest, in the case of the baths of Fiskardo, the relevant information is provided or in the case of the baths of Same the visitors are asked to answer relevant questions.
