Η Συλλογή της Μονεμβασίας στεγάζεται σε ιστορικό διατηρητέο κτήριο με πολλές οικοδομικές φάσεις: κτίσθηκε ως Τζαμί στην Τουρκοκρατία (16ος αιώνας), μετασκευάσθηκε σε δημόσιο κτήριο στην Β’ Ενετοκρατία (1690-1713) και λειτούργησε ως φυλακή και καφενείο μετά την Απελευθέρωση.
Η Αρχαιολογική Συλλογή της Μονεμβασίας παρουσιάζει στοιχεία της μνήμης αλλά και της γνώσης μας για την ταυτότητα του “περιώνυμου άστεως” της Μονεμβασίας, η παρουσία της οποίας στη βραχώδη άκρη της Πελοποννήσου μαρτυρείται από τον 6ο μ.Χ. αιώνα. Η Συλλογή εγκαινιάσθηκε από την Υπουργό Πολιτισμού Ελισάβετ Παπαζώη τον Ιούλιο του 1999.
Η επίκαιρη θέση της Μονεμβασίας στους θαλάσσιους δρόμους, ο στόλος της που κυριαρχούσε στα γνωστά λιμάνια της Μεσογείου αλλά και σ’ αυτά του Ευξείνου Πόντου, τα φημισμένα προϊόντα της (όπως ο εξαίρετος Μαλβάζιος οίνος), τα μέλη της κοινωνίας της που διακρίθηκαν στο εμπόριο, σε “τεχνών ασκήσεις” και σε άλλες πνευματικές δραστηριότητες, η τοπική εκκλησία της που ανέδειξε σημαντικές προσωπικότητες, αλλά και η εύνοια που της παρασχέθηκε με αυτοκρατορικά χρυσόβουλα, σφυρηλάτησαν το κύρος και τη φήμη της.
Μέσα στον ανοικτό μουσειακό χώρο της Μονεμβασίας τα ιστάμενα μνημεία της (φρούριο, τείχη, σημαντικοί ναοί, σπίτια, δημόσια κτίρια, χαμάμ, στέρνες), που είχαν τύχει και της προσοχής της επιστημονικής έρευνας, αποτελούν τεκμήρια του παρελθόντος της και σηματοδοτούν και την ιστορική της διαδρομή. Έλειπαν, όμως, οι πληροφορίες για άλλες όψεις της ζωής των κατοίκων.
Η μόνιμη έκθεση οργανώθηκε για να παρουσιάσει στο ευρύ κοινό αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα, που προέκυψαν από περισυλλογές και ανασκαφικές διερευνήσεις στο χώρο της Μονεμβασίας. Αποτελούν ιστορικές μαρτυρίες της ανθρώπινης δραστηριότητας και καλλιτεχνικής ζωής που αναπτύχθηκε εδώ, από τα παλαιοχριστιανικά χρόνια μέχρι την όψιμη Τουρκοκρατία, αλλά και υποδηλώνουν την επικοινωνία της Μονεμβασίας, εμπορική και πολιτισμική, με άλλες περιοχές.
Στόχος της έκθεσης είναι να δώσει στοιχεία αφενός για το δημόσιο βίο, μέσα από τη θεματική ενότητα των γλυπτών του δομημένου περιβάλλοντος, και αφετέρου για τον ιδιωτικό ή ατομικό βίο, μέσα από εκείνη των αντικειμένων κεραμικής και μικροτεχνίας. Η έκθεση έχει πρωταρχικά παιδευτικό αλλά και πληροφοριακό χαρακτήρα και τα εκθέματα συνοδεύονται, εκτός από τις πινακίδες τους, και από ανάλογα δίγλωσσα επεξηγηματικά κείμενα. Η προτεινόμενη για τον επισκέπτη διαδρομή αρχίζει από τη βόρεια εσωτερική όψη του κτηρίου, με μία ομάδα γλυπτών του εξωτερικού χώρου: τα οικόσημα, δυτική συνήθεια που εισάγεται κατά τη Φραγκοκρατία (ανάγλυφο με το λέοντα της Βενετίας, πλάκα του 1525 με ανάγλυφο θυρεό) και τα γλυπτά που έχουν σχέση με το ζωτικό για την Καστροπολιτεία θέμα του νερού και της ύδρευσης (στόμιο στέρνας, πλάκα κρήνης κ.ά.).
Archaeological Collection of Monemvasia
The Archaeological Collection has been housed in a historical building with many structural phases: it was originally built as a Muslim mosque during the Turkish occupation (16th century), was reformed into a public building during the second Venetian occupation (1690-1713), and operated as a prison and coffee shop after the Liberation. With the housing of the Archaeological Collection a new phase in its history begins.
The Archaeological Collection of Monemvasia presents elements of common memory and knowledge for the identification of the “the renowned town”, whose presence on the rocky coast of the Peloponnese can be traced back to the 6th century A.D. The Collection was inaugurated by the Minister of Culture, Mrs. Elisavet Papazoi in July 1999.
Monemvasia’s opportune site on the naval routes, its fleet which ruled over the important ports in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, its famous products (“Malvasia” wine, for instance), members of its society distinguished in commerce, in “exercises of art” and in other spiritual activities, its local Archiepiscopacy, which raised significant personalities, but also the favor which has been given to the area through imperial chrysoboules, all made up the town’s fame and prestige.
Within the area of the Castle of Monemvasia, which is itself a museum, the remaining monuments (Castle, fortifications, important churches, houses, public buildings, Ottoman hamams, cisterns), which had attracted the attention of the scientific research, indicate Monemvasia’s glorious past and highlight its historical route. However, information was missing for many different aspects of the inhabitants’ life.
The permanent exhibition was organized in order to present to the public archaeological finds from both gathering and excavating into the Castle. They include historical testimonies of human activity and artistic life which developed here, from the early Christian years until the late centuries of Turkish occupation, but they also suggest the commercial and cultural contacts of Monemvasia with other parts of Greece or abroad.
The main purpose of the exhibition is to promote elements for public life, through a group of sculptures belonging to the surroundings, as well as for private life, through a group with miniature works of art and pottery. The exhibition has both educational and informational character and the exhibits are accompanied, apart from their labels, by the appropriate bilingual explanatory texts. The route suggested to the visitor begins from the north internal part of the building, with a group of sculptures used in open spaces: the coats of arms, a western custom introduced during the Frankish occupation (sculpture with the lion of Venice, plaque with relief coat of arms, dated to 1525) and sculptures related with the vital, for the Castle, matter of water and water supply (cistern’s orifice, plaque from fountain etc.).
