Description

Tilos, one of the smallest islands of the Dodecanese, lies between Rhodes and Kos. With towering mountain ranges and fertile beaches, it combines rugged cliffs and sandy shores, creating an ideal natural habitat for rare birds like the Bonelli's eagle and the Peregrine falcon, as well as hundreds of plant species. It is the first energy-efficient green island in the Mediterranean and functions as an ecological park, protected by international agreements.

This island was home to the last elephants of Europe. The dwarf elephants lived here 45,000 years ago and became extinct 4,000 years ago. In ancient times, it was known for its herbs and thrived, with the poetess Irinna living here. Today, it is a peaceful destination for relaxing holidays, featuring picturesque villages and beautiful beaches, and is considered one of the most authentic and sustainable destinations in the Dodecanese. According to mythology, the island was named after Tilos, son of Alia, sister of the Sun. When Alia fell ill, Tilos went to the island to gather herbs for her healing. After her recovery, he built a sanctuary in honor of Apollo-Sun.

According to mythology, the island was named after Tilos, the son of Alia, sister of Helios. When Alia fell ill, Tilos traveled to the island to gather herbs for her treatment. After she recovered, he built a sanctuary in honor of Apollo-Helios.

The island's capital, Megalo Chorio, impresses with its traditional island architecture and stone-built houses, making it ideal for peaceful strolls through its narrow streets. At the top of the hill stands the medieval castle of the Knights Hospitaller, with remnants of ancient temples and the Church of the Archangel, built on the site of ancient deities.

Another impressive medieval castle of Tilos is the Castle of Mesaria, built in 1366, located at the top of a hill between Megalo Chorio and Livadia. Inside, you can find the ruins of houses and the small church of Prophet Elias. In Megalo Chorio, the archaeological museum displays significant finds from the Harkadio Cave, including paleontological remains, vases, sculptures, and inscriptions from various areas of the island. A visit to the museum pairs perfectly with a stop at Harkadio Cave, where you can see remains of deer and dwarf elephants that lived on the island 45,000 to 4,000 years ago. The seaside settlement of Agios Antonios, 2 km to the east, hosts fishing and excursion boats. Visit the Byzantine Monastery of Agios Panteleimon (15th century), located in a lush area with cypress and plane trees (9 km southwest). Byzantine frescoes and the 18th-century wood-carved iconostasis are well-preserved. Livadia is located on the southeastern coast, at the foot of the mountains rising above its beach. From a distance, you can see Symi and the mountains of Turkey. The island's port, serving both ships and leisure boats, is here. The village streets feature accommodations, taverns, and cafes with sea views. For swimming, the pebble beach near the port offers crystal-clear waters and a unique atmosphere. If you're lucky, you may swim alongside the famous cormorant that frequents this beach! In Livadia, your walk will impress you with the police station building, a beautiful example of architecture from the Italian occupation period (1912-1948). Continue to the small medieval harbor of Agios Stefanos and its lighthouse. At the mountain’s peak stands the impressive Castle of Agiosykia (15th century). Also noteworthy is the picturesque village of Gera, with the "Despoti Nero" spring. Visit the 16th-century Church of Archangel Michael, accessible via a path, offering stunning views of the area. Tilos is surrounded by 16 islets, with the largest being Antitilos and Gaidaros. With your own boat or a chartered caique from Livadia, you can explore the secluded shores of Tilos and the nearby islands, home to rare bird species that nest there. The Small Village, built in the 15th century on the hills above Livadia, was abandoned after World War II. Its residents moved to Livadia due to the growth of trade around the port. Today, remnants of a castle, crumbling stone houses, cobbled streets, and Byzantine churches like St. John Abdalas and Agia Zoni, with ancient frescoes, create a unique atmosphere.
