Vatika Castle is first mentioned in the Chronicle of the Morea, which records the granting of the area by William II Villehardouin to the nobles of Monemvasia. In 1262, the region came under Byzantine rule and later alternated between Venetian and Ottoman control until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

Το The Archaeological Museum of Thera is located in Fira and presents the historical and artistic development of Thera from the Archaic to the Roman period. The collection includes important finds from archaeological excavations on Thera and at Ancient Thera, such as sculptures, inscriptions, pottery, architectural elements and other objects that shed light on the social, religious and artistic life of the island in antiquity. A special place is occupied by the Kore of Thera, a colossal Archaic statue and one of the most significant works of ancient Greek sculpture.
